14 Feb VALENTINE’S DAY

In modern context, Valentines Day is celebrated as an occasion when lovers express their love towards each other. It falls on February 14 and coincides with the day on which St. Valentine was martyred. The popularity of Valentines Day is immense and it is observed as holiday in several countries including United States.
On Valentines Day, lovers exchange gifts and valentine cards. People also donate to charity and gift candies on this day. Flowers are the most popular gifts for Valentine's Day. Among flowers, rose is most liked and gifted. It is said that red rose is gifted to express love where as yellow rose and other flowers are gifted for pure friendship.
This day is closely marked with mutual exchange of love notes or valentines between the lovers. Previously, handwritten love notes and love poems were exchanged, but later from 19th century onwards-mass scale production of Greeting Cards started. This development also gave rise to the commercialization of thus far a sacred Valentines Day.
The main symbols of Valentine's Day are the heart shaped outlines and the figures of winged Cupid. Numerous gift items flood the gift shops, as Valentines Day gets closer. Customized valentine cards are also a major attraction of the gifts shops. Greeting Cards sites come with new and fresh valentine e-cards. E cards cover wide themes on valentine like valentine kiss cards, valentine flowers cards, valentine teddy cards, valentine friends cards etc.
Valentine cards are a popular thing to convey the tender emotions of individuals. After Christmas cards, valentine cards are the most circulated cards. This day is more popular in women than men, a source says. A vast amount of information is circulated through various mediums on unique Valentine day ideas and tips, party destinations, gift shops, flower centers etc. Newspapers, TV channels and radio channels air programs and stories related to this day from weeks before the actual Valentine's Day.
From a week before 14th February, celebration of valentine week begins. Each day has different theme like 7th Rose Day, 8th Propose Day, 9th Chocolate Day, 10th Teddy Day, 11th Promise Day, 11th Kiss Day, 13th Hug Day and finally Valentines Day on 14th.
Lovers wait for Valentine's Day impatiently. A lot of people propose their feelings of love for the first time to their sweethearts on this day. Proposals are taken in positive spirit on the part of proposed. At the same time, outright rejections are avoided.

How to cook up a Valentine’s ‘Week of Love’

For most of us, Valentine’s Day “food shopping” consists of little more than a quick scan of the heart-shaped boxes of chocolates that has become the almost mandatory accompaniment to a more personal gift.
And if your sweetheart is really lucky, a last-minute bunch of flowers.
I have four words for you: Same old, same old.
So, instead of the tried and true — and boring — why not spice things up a bit this year? My suggestion for this Valentine’s season is to create a fabulous Week of Love, starting on Monday, Feb. 7, and leading up to the big day — when you prepare a sensual feast of aphrodisiac foods (which I’ll tell you all about in next week’s column).
Don’t know a crumb about cooking? Let chocolate and flowers (and, OK, cards) do the work!
First, the flowersWonder why red roses are thought of as the flower of love? Well, it’s not the rose part that is so important — it’s the fact that they are red.
Studies have shown that as we see red flowers, red cars and even red street signs, the color actually increases our blood flow.
So no matter what flower you like — choose red! In fact, my suggestion is to select a different single flower for each of the seven days. Pick flowers that are sumptuous and rich. (You may need to find a florist with a wide range of exotic blooms.)
Then the cardsGet to the card store early. Most years, the best Valentine’s Day cards sell out early, and since this is sone of the occasions where a card that is late (even by hours) is unacceptable, retailers tend not to overstock.
And buy eight cards — yes, eight. The first seven are for each day leading up to Valentine’s; with the most romantic for the actual day.
Vary the message and design, choose funny ones, sensuous ones and even look for more unusual ones. One category that offers a pleasant surprise is those Valentine’s Day cards that are designed for kids and teen sweethearts!
Finally, the chocolatesTo make your seven-day experience complete, present your loved one with a single piece of individually wrapped chocolate each day. Famed for their aphrodisiac qualities, chocolates are a sure way to the heart — and a different selection every day will add to the excitement. I prefer to start off with a heart-shaped dark chocolate leading up to a liqueur-filled, chocolate-covered cherry.
Remember that dark chocolates contain the most antioxidants and polyphenols, the chemicals that give you those warm feelings. It’s the polyphenols which release endorphins, the so-called happy hormones.
And don’t forget…Timing is everything! And that means, if possible, presenting the seven days of love first thing in the morning. Start off each day with your flower, card and chocolate on a tray brought to the bed or breakfast table. For those who are still wooing, chances are things will have to wait until the evening — but try to make it a regular daily occasion.

Though the jail's visiting hours for the day had ended, the Superintendent allowed Katrina and the others to meet Salman for about half an hour at around 3 pm.

Anand Rai justifies his lead actor, "Though I had explained the scene, I understand that actors sometimes are not comfortable doing intimate scenes on screen. When I set out to make the film, I was clear that my film was about relationship. Therefore a kissing scene with Nandana or the semi-nude scene of Sonali Kulkarni, though important for the emotional turmoil the character goes, I was always flexible for options and pointers from the star cast."

SRK pays Rs 27 cr advance tax

Shah Rukh Khan will be the highest income-tax payer from Bollywood for the second year in a row. He has paid advance taxes of Rs 27 crore till December 15, 2007, said sources, putting his income for 2007-08 at over Rs 100 crore. It is a glittering jump from the money he made the previous fiscal when he paid a modest Rs 18 crore in tax. 2007 has been a particularly prosperous year for Shah Rukh Khan, who has often called himself “priceless’’. He has not only had two mega hits under his belt - Chak De, India and Om Shanti Om , which he also produced - but also earned Rs 1 crore for every episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati . In the income-tax stakes, SRK is far ahead of the competition. Hrithik Roshan, who paid Rs 15 crore last year, had no releases in 2007 though his endorsement list has grown longer. Aamir Khan, who paid Rs 6 crore last year, released only one film, Taare Zameen Par , and is known to have taken the distribution rights as part of his remuneration. He has paid advance taxes worth Rs 3 crore While Amitabh Bachchan paid Rs 8 crore in income tax last year, his advance tax payment until December 15, 2007 was only Rs 1.8 crore. Bachchan, who is said to have upped his fee in 2008, is no more among the highest paid actors but his endorsement roster is still a blue-chip one. Among those who have paid a high advance tax this fiscal are Akshay Kumar (Rs 7 crore, although there have been media reports in the recent about the actor paying tax of Rs 26 crore) and Himesh Reshammiya (Rs 2.5 crore). The singer charges Rs 5.5 crore as a composer and actor. Abhishek Bachchan has paid Rs 3.7 crore (much higher than his returns the previous year) while his wife Aishwarya Rai has paid Rs 1.6 crore. Close behind Rai is actor Kareena Kapoor with Rs 1 crore in advance tax. On the corporate entertainment front, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Pvt Ltd paid advance taxes worth Rs 70 crore. They have done the maximum buying of films in 2007 including hits like Om Shanti Om and Taare Zameen Par . Hindustan Thompson was next (Rs 6 crore) followed by Balaji Telefilms (Rs 4.5 crore), Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies (Rs 3 crore) and Amitabh Bachchan’s company AB Corporation (Rs 2.4 crore). Eros Entertainment, which bought the worldwide distribution rights of Om Shanti Om for a whopping Rs 70 crore from Shah Rukh Khan, had deducted Rs 7 crore in tax deducted at source in this transaction alone.

Indian Movies

In India, cinema came into existence in the year 1896, on July 7, when Lumière Brothers’ showed six short films at Watson Hotel, Mumbai. Three years later, Harischandra Sakharam Bhatwadekar, shot and demonstrated two short films. Thereafter several attempts were taken in the early part of the 20th century to make films and stage plays. In the year 1913, the first intrinsic silent feature film named ‘Raja Harishchandra’ (3700 feet long) was released and it was a huge success. It was directed by Dhundiraj Govind Phalke (1870 - 1944) affectionately called Dadasaheb Phalke, a successful painter more popularly the 'Father of Indian Cinema'. He got inspired by seeing the movie ‘The Life Of Christ’ on a trip to London. Indian film industry blossomed with the introduction of sound in the year 1931 when the first talkie film called ‘Alam Ara’ released, directed by Ardeshir Irani, later dubbed into Hindi and Urdu. There on the film industry was splited on language lines where Hindi mainly being the North and Tamil, Telugu in South. In today’s era, Bollywood is known as ‘Hindi Cinema’. The name ‘Bollywood’ is an amalgamation of ‘Bombay’ (the old name of Mumbai) and ‘Hollywood’ (the center of the U.S.A. film industry). It’s a colloquial name given to the Mumbai based Hindi Film Industry in India and is considered to be the hub of Indian cinema.Indian movies are mainly classified as musicals. Movies are hardly made without any song or dance numbers. Indian audiences want their money worth it by watching a full entertainer. Indian commercial films are of two to three hours long with an intermission in whatever regional center they are made. They tend to be melodramatic and sentimental. Indian movies also features romance, comedy, action, suspense, and other generic elements. Apart from commercial cinema, there is also Indian cinema that aspires to seriousness or art. People in India call them 'Art' films. The primary difference between American and Indian commercial cinema, is that Indian film usually feature periodic song and dance routines, which, in a good movie, are expected to move the story. Songs are sung by professional playback singers and lip synched by dancing actors and actresses. Renowned singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, K. L. Saigal, Suraiyya, Noor Jehan has recorded many songs for Indian cinemas.People from various parts of India take part in Indian movies. Thousands of actors and actresses are already working in Indian cinema and thousands are waiting eagerly to get a break in the stardom. Only a few people became national icons like Amitabh Bachchan, who was voted the "greatest star of stage or screen" by a millennium poll conducted by the BBC. He is the first Indian actor to be featured in Madame Tussaud’s wax museum in London. Apart from him there are big stars like Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan who has made the most of their fame. Directors like Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, Shyam Benegal, Mehboob, Satyajit Ray (got an ‘Oscar’ for the Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award) have left behind an indelible mark in the Indian celluloid.Budgets of Indian cinema are modest by Hollywood standards. Sets, costumes, special effects and cinematography were less than world-class up until 1990s. From there on Indian cinema has taken a long plunge in increasing its standards and to be at par with Hollywood. Today funds are coming from private distributors, financers and few large studios. Film sequences today are shot overseas and that has proved a huge box office hit. Although Bollywood is suffering from widespread copyright infringement, where it is still one of the richest industries where a huge amount comes from overseas film rights.Like other film industries, Indian cinemas also have their share of accolades, Filmfare Awards being the most prestigious among them all. The first Filmfare Awards was started in 1953 by the Indian Screen Magazine ‘Filmfare’. There are other awards like Zee Cine Awards, Star Screen Awards, Stardust Awards, IIFA Awards, Apsara Awards et al. Award ceremonies are usually a star studded with a lot of glam and glitter where the events are lavishly staged spectacles, featuring singing, dancing, and lots of stars and starlets. In 1973, the Indian government has sponsored the National Film Awards and it also gives the Dadasaheb Phalke Award annually as recognition of a lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. The award is in memory of Dadasaheb Phalke, as a tribute to the Father of Indian cinema. The Indian film industry is one of the largest in the world. Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad is the world's largest production complex and the biggest movie studio in the world. India also features the cheapest cost of tickets in the world. Indian cinema is supported mainly by the vast cinema going Indian public, although Indian films have been gaining increasing popularity in the rest of the world — given the large Indian diaspora in English speaking countries at large.

Rajni's short and sweet gift for 2008... and its not 'Robot'

The media went rabid last week. Just as they unerringly go bonkers everytime Thalaivar's new project is announced, but this time around, the surprise quotient was up a couple of notches. Surprise for the fact that Shankar's darling idea, destined for a place way back in his "idea cupboard",destined to sleep among mothballs after having got the ceremonious boot from SRK and Aamir Khan suddenly found its place back, right in the middle of media circus. All thanks to Rajnikanth. With Thalaivar in the picture, literally and figuratively, production executives and distributors are back to dreaming Dollars, and the production budget just went out of the back window, never to return and worry the Director anymore and everyone is back to dreaming in Crores now. The signs are healthy. Good. And close to the heels of ROBOT, Rajnikanth announced something else that in the end is going to give him, more creative satisfaction than his next Million Dollar Project. This little note,my dear Constant Viewer,is about that little gesture. Rajnikanth is going to remake Katha Parayumbol, a Malayalam movie now running to packed houses and rave critical acclaim in Kerala, written by Srinivasan,Director/Storyteller Extraordinaire' under the Kavithalaya banner, owned by Rajni's mentor, the famed K.Balachander. And he plans it to be released by June/July before the shooting for Robot gets underway.Katha Prayumbol is the heartwarming story of a deeply cherished friendship between a village barber and the reigning Movie Superstar who comes to shoot for a movie in the quaint village where the barber lives a step above poverty with his wife and daughters. Its a poignant, bitter-sweet and heartwarming tale laced with subtle yet scalding doses of self-deprecating humor that can only come form the talented hands of Srinivasan. Anyone who has been an ardent follower of his movies can watch out for the famed Srini's Sarcasm that usually has the- powers -that -be squirming in their seats. It was Srinivasan's acclaimed Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam that Priyadarshan remade to Yeh Tera Ghar, Yeh Mera Ghar some pirated years ago.The original roles of the barber, played by Srinivasan and the Superstar played by Mammootty will be reprised by Pasupathy and Thalaivar in its Tamil avatar. And he has roped in P.Vasu to direct this movie, and have it released by mid -2008. Music is handled by Vidyasagar.P.Vasu is no stranger to remaking classics from Malayalam, and that too with Rajnikanth in the lead role. The last one he did was Chandramukhi. Enough said. Even if he customizes it to the regional flavor, hopefully much wouldn't be lost in the spirit of the movie as its such a simple, warm movie. The climax of the movie is being touted as one of the best in the Malayalam movie history and it revolves around the Superstar. Rajnikanth zeroed in on the potential of a remake after watching the preview with Srinivasan, who was his junior in Film Institute, and is said to have embraced him, choking for words of appreciation. For all of Thalaivar's fans whose world now has found a new Sun called Robot to revolve around till its release might be in for a little disappointment on the visibly 'small' scale of the movie.May it be. But, a Rajnikanth's movie is always a healthy sign for the economics of the industry. They dont' call him a one-man industry for nothing. But even Rajnikanth loves to take a break from the usual Rajni movies. This, my dear Constant Rajni Fan, will be one of them !!!

My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves - Music Review

Album: My Name Is Anthony GonsalvesMusic Director: Pritam Chakraborty, Sachin-Jiggar, Himesh ReshammiyaSingers: Sunidhi Chauhan, KK, Shaan, Remo Fernandes, Dj Amit Das, Amit KumarRatings: **E. Niwas is ready to present My Name is Anthony Gonsalves. In an attempt to do everything right for his film, the director brings on board music wonders like Pritam and Himesh Reshammiya. He even ropes in new composer, Sachin-Jiggar for one track. But all his efforts go down the drain. The album starts off with Sachin-Jigar's 'Allah Beli'. Romantic with a slight base in soft rock and jazz, 'Allah Beli' doesn't turn out to be a bad attempt. However, the song sung by KK cannot be termed a chartbuster. The next number is 'Jaane maula jaane khuda'. The moderate track wouldn't hurt anybody but skipping it wouldn't hurt either. Amit Kumar renders to Pritam's composition who, for one, hasn't given his best here. Even Sameer's lyrics do not heat up this lukewarm number. Then follows 'Tere bina'. Sunidhi Chauhan takes up the mike for the number composed by Pritam. An impressive track would be expected from a composer-singer duo of such mettle, but the team clearly fails to do so. Overall, the track just fizzles out.Surprisingly, it is Himesh Reshammiya who manages to break this chain of unexciting numbers. His composition, 'Tum mile' stirs the senses. Sunidhi and KK pair up to render the number that features several key instruments.'Ya baba' is like those typical dance numbers that first appear in movies and are later played in clubs for the hip-shaking, Bollywood music lovers. Pritam hasn't worked hard on this song which ends up spoiling the singers' chances as well. Sameer appears average with his lyrics and Sunidhi and Shaan can't do much to impress the masses.Himesh Reshammiya is the winner among the trio of composers roped in for the album. While Sachin-Jigar show promise, Pritam is most disappointing. For someone known for belting out hits like Jab We Met and Life... In A Metro, My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves wouldn't be a career highlight.

2007 Hindi film awards

The year 2007 ended on a brilliant note with the release of "Taare Zameen Par". It started off with a highly successful film in the name of "Guru". We had the hutke movies like "Chak De India" rake in a lot of moolah as well. At the same time we had typical masala movies like "Om Shanthi Om" and the comedy flicks like "Welcome", "Heyy Baby", "Partner", "Bheja Fry" and dare I say "Cheeni Kum". We also had duds like "Nishabd" and "RGV ki Aag" from the usually reliable Ram Gopal Varma. Even Yash Raj films came up with a dud like "Jhoom barabar jhoom". There were the critically acclaimed commercial failures like "Ek chaalis ki last local", "Dharm" and "Manorama six feet down under". There were those that were neither critically acclaimed nor were they ever poised for commerical success "Eklavya" is one I can clearly remember. Let us look at who takes away the honours for the 2007 Hindi film awards as decided by me! Best art direction: Omung Kumar (Sawariya)Best dialogue: Sanjeev Dutta (Life In A... Shah Rukh Khan - Interview

He's Bollywood's latest obsession – the badshah of Bollywood, the king of tinsel town. For a decade and a half, Shah Rukh Khan's been ruling the roost in the film industry. You'd think age would come with decline. But post-40, SRK's popularity only seems to be increasing, as are his fortunes. The year 2007 was especially good for King Khan – both Chak De! India and Om Shanti Om collected mind-boggling amounts. There's another thing that keeps Shah Rukh much above the rest – sharp business acumen. SRK's Red Chilies made a killing on Om Shanti Om and he used visible platforms to promote the film, even drawing flak for it. Nevertheless, the marketing earned the desired results. Now, King Khan is line producing another film My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves. A chat with the actor at the music release of the film:How come you attended the music release of a film with no significant cast? I come here to check if the newcomers are better than me. If they are, I have to work harder. If not, I'll just go away happy ( laughs). Seriously speaking, I came because a lot of close friends are involved in the project. It's a very talented team and I am here to convey my best wishes. It's a good film and I am sure it will do well. I hope it turns out to be the biggest hit of the year because of my favorite Mithun Chakraborty, who has inspired a lot of people like me to do better. So, you're a fan of Mithun Chakraborty…I have been his fan since childhood, ever since I saw Mriguya. I am a fan of Gunmaster G9. It was my dream to work with him but by the time I entered the film industry, he had launched his hotel and moved to Ooty. He doesn't know that the first film shooting I saw was at Juhu Circle from 9 pm to 2 am when he came, gave his shot and left. I am grateful to him for doing a song sequence in OSO. He is a wonderful actor and has that star quality. We hear the hero in My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves, Nikhil Dwivedi, resembles you… I don't think any actor can resemble me. Who has six-pack abs like mine? (laughs) On a serious note, I don't think it's fair to compare actors. Everyone has his own identity. When Mithun came in, he started with Mriguya and went on to do James Bond-type roles and Gunmaster G9. I can assure you there are people better than him, taller than him and better looking than him but they will never be Mithun. He's carved his own niche. About Nikhil, he will go through five stages. First is when people will ask – 'Who is Nikhil Dwivedi?' Second when they will say 'Get me Nikhil Dwivedi'. The third stage is when they will say 'Get me a Nikhil Dwivedi type' and the fourth stage – which I am in right now – is when they will say 'Get me a younger Nikhil Dwivedi'. And the last stage is again when the say 'Who is Nikhil Dwivedi?'. The film also stars Amrita Rao… I call her the 'little sweetheart'. She is small in size but big in stature. A great actress, a great dancer. My Name is Anthony Gonsalves is a strange name for a movie… I think it's a brilliant title. It has lyricism like the old song. There is a bit of naughtiness too. When E Niwas told me about the title I liked it very much and I was hoping that the film isn't made and I could use the title for my own production. But they worked hard and made the film. ( laughs) Wouldn't that make people think of Amitabh Bachchan? Obviously, it would remind you of him and not Om Prakash. Lots of titles are used from songs but I think this is a tribute to Amitabh in a certain sense. This film is very different and as far as I know it is like Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. There is a sweet, poignant sensibility to it. You are the line producer of the movie. What made you do it? When Sahara, E Niwas and T-Series decided they wanted to make the film, they told me. Since they are close friends, I decided to get involved. They are new to production, so our team helped in line producing the film. Whatever guidance we could give them, we gave and we also learnt a lot in the process. Right now films don't need big budgets but good talent and hard work. My company also learnt from E Niwas how to make a wonderful film without spending too much money.

Hindi Song | Sunday (2007)

What if one day went missing from your life?? That's the the tagline of Sunday. The answer to that question depends on who you ask. If you ask a lazy nobody like me who has spent days without doing anything meaningful, the answer would be 'So #$%&*@# what!!' But Bill Gates will have a different answer for you. Anyhow, Sunday is a film by Rohit Shetty and stars Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Ayesha Takia, Irfaan Khan and Anjana Sukhani. The average, not-so-special songs of Sunday are composed by DJ Suketu and Shibani Kashyap. Enough said. Hindi Song | Showbiz (2007)

Showbiz, as the name suggests, is about the ups and downs of showbiz, with a focus more on the downs. It tackles the relationship between reporters/journalists and celebrities. It's a film by Raju Khan, and stars Tushar Jalota, Mrinalini Sharma and Gulshan Grover in major roles.Music of Showbiz is by Lalit Pandit. I hope you enjoy the songs. A R Rahman: The genius

am hoping to at times write things related to ARR here. I hope I get time and energy to write about him after writing things about myself in my personal blog
I am currently hearing to "Baba Kichchu Kichchu Thaa" and thinking, if his "way below par" score (as Baba is widely believed to be) is this good, I should not fear him ever disappointing me really. Though, I must admit he is the music director who has disappointed me more than any other music director ever has. But then thats because I can't think of many rahman albums which don't disappoint after one hearing. Its the third hearing that's the key.. I cant think of many rahman albums that I haven't been absolutely crazy about after third hearing.. so, there you are.. this is his magic.. I hope I'll be able to write things here that some people might read sometime.. maybe I'll be the means of some people discovering something that will change their life forever.. discovering A R Rahman..

New Yahoo! Music Homepage is LIVE!!!

Many of you may have noticed that our beloved Yahoo! Music site, though rich in content, has become a bit outdated in look and feel. Ok, I’ll admit it: the site looks like something out of 2001. That’s because we haven’t changed it much since, well, 2001.
We’ve finally decided to change that. Today we’re launching our new Homepage in beta, with a new feature set that we hope you’ll love as much as we do. Some of the new goodies include:
What’s New Today: the top module on the page will bring you the best picks from our editorial team, served up twice daily. Ranging from the popular to the brand new and from beloved to the bizarre, we’ll be showcasing the most interesting stuff the Music world has to offer.
Personalization: If you’re like me and the editorial selections will seldom appeal to your off-beat tastes (ok, Lyndsey has promised to feature the new Chemical Brothers album this week! It’s pretty great, I highly recommend it), never fear! One of the most exciting features in my opinion is the new Personalized Recommendations module, which will provide recommendations of music videos, songs, albums and artists to check out, all based on your ratings. If you haven’t rated any music with us, now would be a great time to start.
Charts: Everyone wants to know what’s popular, right? We’ve expanded our charts to include songs and albums, in addition to videos. If you click on ‘View All Charts’, you can drill down and see charts by genre, so you can dig in and check out the most popular indie rock songs, jazz albums or blues videos (yes, we really do have blues videos. Who knew?!)
Blogs: We’re marching boldly into 2006 by embracing this whole blogging thing. I think it might be big. Seriously, I’m very excited that our editorial team has pulled together some great writers who will be taking on different beats, talking about everything from the week’s best new releases to the hip-hop scene to music from your favorite reality TV shows. We’re going to be adding more bloggers in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
Concerts: Ok, this is one of my personal favorites. We’ve done a mashup with Upcoming, a user-generated events site that Yahoo! owns, to bring you listings of concerts happening in your local area. The Concerts page also includes a handy map. If you know a show is happening but can’t find it, just go to upcoming.yahoo.com and add it.
My Radio: This is a preview of things to come, but we’ll be giving you persistent access to your personalized radio station throughout the new pages. This is something we’ll be rolling out across the rest of the site.
This re-launch of our new homepage is only the first step in our efforts to bring our site up to date and provide you with a much better user experience. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be revamping our entire site, adding new features, changing the look & feel, improving performance and adding fresh content. We hope you like it. If you want to make sure you see the brand new Homepage, just go to music.yahoo.com/beta. Please check it out and click on the ‘feedback’ link on the page to send us your thoughts. We’d love to hear from you.
One more thing: I want to publicly thank our very talented design, development and QA teams who make this all possible. It’s really a pleasure to work with smart, creative, energetic and passionate people. You guys really make it all possible. Thank you.

Everyone Deserves Music

we created a Music Videos application on Facebook that makes it easy to find and share videos with your Facebook friends.
A few weeks later we teamed up with RockYou, one of the most popular developers of Facebook applications, to launch a new version that is integrated with some of their cool apps like Super Wall.
Now, we’re bringing the best music videos on the planet to two more places where music lovers hang out (read: everywhere), Piczo and Bebo.
Like Ian said, it’s about convenience, and more importantly: context. What that really means is that we all discover music every day as we walk through life (both offline and on) so putting up walled gardens and surrounding them with armies is just silly. When you express yourself through music, anyone that digs your taste should be able to hit play and see if you’re onto something, and vice versa. We don’t get a lot of mail asking us to make it harder to find, share, and buy music, or that we keep it bottled up behind a yahoo.com address. Thanks to emerging web standards, those barriers are fading too.
So, wherever you’re spending your time online, you can bet we’ll be there slinging music, and more importantly, giving you the tools to do it yourself. Because, like Michael said, everyone deserves music.

Yahoo! New Homepage and Music Videos Section YMusicBlog General, Yahoo! Music Videos, Yahoo! Music

A few months ago I posted on our release of the beta version of our new Homepage and Music Videos section. Today I’m excited to announce that we’ve exited beta and have made the new site available to everyone who visits music.yahoo.com.
WOO-HOO!!!
As I mentioned in July, this is the first significant change that we’ve made to our site since 2001. Since then, a lot has changed on the Internet, but our music website has remained the same, almost attaining the kind of affectionate status you reserve for an old sweatshirt that is incredibly comfortable but makes your Significant Other cringe every time they see it.
When we started this project many months ago, we had little idea of what the site would look like when done, but we had some pretty clear ideas about where we wanted to go. We’d spent some time talking to people who use our site and assessing opinions through surveys to determine where we wanted to take the site. I dug up some of my old documentation to remember what the heck I was thinking when we started this project, and thought I’d share what we wanted to do and how the end product stacked up:
Editorial Voice: A while back, my colleague Todd Beaupre did a great presentation on the need for more editorial voice on our site. The challenge is that while people who use our site love getting context to better understand the music they hear and the videos they watch and often appreciate the recommendations of our editorial staff on what’s new and worth a listen, we cater to 25 million people each month and finding an editorial voice that appeals to everyone and turns off no one is pretty impossible. So we decided to create several editorial channels and let our users pick from among them.
We ended up developing two editorial placements on our new Homepage: one is the large module in the upper left-hand side of the page that showcases our best picks of videos, music, photos and lyrics. The other is our Music Blogs module, found at the bottom of the page, that lets our bloggers communicate their favorite music, playlists, great (or truly horrifying) moments in entertainment and everything else you need to know about the wide world of music. The bloggers are really an exceptional group, including our own Dave DiMartino and Lyndsey Parker; bloggers from some great publications and sites like MOJO, Arthur, NME, URB, Spin and JamBase; and other fine folks from outside of Yahoo! who are sharing their playlists and observations about the music scene. One great find here is a blog that we recently kicked off on hearing that Led Zeppelin is getting back together. Our Executive Editor Dave DiMartino will be posting some great, exclusive stuff in the coming days. The best part of the blogs feature is that we put our users in control of what they see: if you click through to our main blogs page you can select which blogs you want to see, and screen out the ones you don’t like.
I have to say that since we released our site in beta, the blogs have become one of the most popular areas of the new site, as well as one of my personal favorites.
Personalization: Ever since we created LAUNCHcast Radio back in the dawn of (Internet) time, our team has spent a lot of time investing in better ways to get you the music you like and not waste your time with music you don’t dig. We’ve now taken the same technology that powers LAUNCHcast and Yahoo! Music Unlimited (YMU) recommendations and brought it to our site. The middle of our new Homepage page has a section with Videos, Songs, Albums and Artists, all personalized to your tastes. You’ll also see a similar module on the new main music videos page that’s focused on music video content.
If you haven’t started rating music, click on ‘Improve My Recommendations’ and start telling us what you like. The music you rate will also influence your personal radio station and your YMU recommendations.
Live Music: My love for music got re-awakened four and a half years ago at the Coachella Music Festival in 2003, so I have a deep appreciation for live music. We’ve partnered with Yahoo!’s Upcoming service to bring you information about music events around the country, anything from large concerts to shows at your local neighborhood bar. Check out the module on the lower left-hand side of the Homepage for a snapshot of concerts, and click on ‘View more concerts’ for a longer list of shows. The events on Upcoming are submitted by users such as yourselves, so please click on the ‘Get Started’ button on the button of the module to tell us about concerts we’ve missed.
Video Playlisting and Stations: One thing a lot of users told us during our research is that they wanted to more easily queue up a bunch of music videos and play through them. We created two ways of doing this: one is video playlisting, and the other is our music video stations. Video playlists are accessible through the My Music bar on the right-hand side and allow users to set up a list of videos and play through them. Music Video Stations are available from the main Music Videos page (click on the ‘Videos’ tab in the navigation bar) and are programmed by our editorial team to reflect the best music videos from different genres, eras and our original programs.
Sharing Tools: Music is an inherently social experience, so we’ve taken some first steps to let you share your musical tastes with others. If you click on the link for a music video, you’ll come to a page that will show you the embed code for the video.
If you copy and paste that code into any HTML page, the video will appear in an embedded player. This can be used to include your favorite music videos on any website or personal page. One note is that not all of the record labels have given us rights to have embed codes for their music videos, so there may be some videos that we don’t let you share. We are working on trying to get rights for all of our videos as fast as we can.
This embed code functionality is just the first step in making the music experience on our site more social. I recognize that this is an area where we’ve really lagged in the past couple of years, but we’re committed to changing that. In the next several months, you’ll see us add a lot more features to make the idea of music community on our site a lot stronger, culminating in what I think are some very innovative ideas in this area. So if you’re looking for more social tools and sharing functionality, stick with us and I promise you won’t be disappointed!
Music Playback: One thing we didn’t plan for in the beginning of this experience but incorporated along the way is better playback of songs. If you click on any play button for a song (but not a video) on the new Homepage, we’ll play back the song in a very slick new audio player that slides out on the left-hand side of the page. If you’re looking for some selections, try the Charts module on the left-hand side of the page and select ‘Songs’ from the drop-down, or click on the Songs tab in the recommendations module in the middle of the page. Most users will get 30-second samples, but YMU subscribers will hear full-length tracks, just like in the Yahoo! Music Jukebox. This is a little gift to our subscribers, and a taste of more to come next year.
User Suggestions: During the time when we were out in beta, many users gave us feedback on what they liked and didn’t like about the new site. While many users were very positive, some told us things they wanted to see improved. There were three main comments:
My Videos: users wanted easier access to the videos they’ve rated so they can play their favorite stuff. We added a link to ‘Videos I’ve Rated’ in the navigation bar, under the main ‘Videos’ link, to provider easier access to this content.
My Radio: some users have had trouble finding their personal radio station. There are two ways to access it in the new site: hover over the ‘Radio’ link in the nav and click on ‘Play My Station’, or look on the Homepage (or any of the pages with the new design, like blogs, concerts, charts or the music videos section) and you can see a link to play your personal station on the right-hand side of the page. If you don’t have a station, just start rating some music and one will be created for you.
Videos by Genre: our old site had a link in the videos nav to videos organized by genre. We’ve moved that navigation to the main Music Videos page with a navigational system that we think is easier to browse. We’re looking at some ways to make this more visible to help out those of you who are looking for quicker access to this feature.
Well, I think I’ve said enough about the new pages. I hope you all are happy with the new Homepage and Music Videos experience. We’ll be updating the features as we go along so stay tuned for more improvements in the coming months. We also recognize that some major areas of our site, like the Artist section and the Radio section, have not yet been redesigned. Tackling these pages is next on our list, so look for improvements early next year.
And PLEASE feel free to give us your thoughts and opinions on what you like and what you don’t like. We really do read that stuff and use it to make decisions. Just click on the ‘feedback’ link in the footer and send us your comments.

Music review in my view!

Music refer’s to the property that determines how good it is, how strong and emotion effects it has and how much we enjoy listening to it. The music varies from person to person. There are different kinds of music Indian, Russian etc. The music I like most is Indian music, which includes multiples verities of folk, pop, popular, classical music etc. Indian classical music tradition including carnatic and Hindustani music. The Indian music is the oldest musical tradition in the world. The origin of the Indian Music came from the "Vedas".The basic of the Indian music is "Sangeet". Sangeet is the combination of three art forms: Vocal music, instrumental music and Dance. These days Indian music is based upon two important pillar's 'rag' and 'tal'. Rag is the melodic from while Tal is the rhythmic. Many musical instruments are peculiar to India. The most famous are Sitar and Tabla. All of this makes up the complex and exciting field of Indian Classical music. Music is a fact of like that we take for granted.

Songs of this summer

I was just looking back at some of the posts of this summer thse days. Yes, I know, there hasn’t been much posting going on and I am sorry for this. Maybe not enough new things, not enough time to write or a combination of both.
Still, I noticed some of the best songs of this summer - not necesarelly new - are missing and I am going to dedicate this post to them.
Citizen Cope - Brother Lee - Inspired and suggested by A., this song goes down to being nice, fun and quite refreshing. Good for mood-lifting :)
Hara & Tamango - Muro Shavo - Get’s me thinking of Vama Veche always and some of the old days at concerts there. Now this ain’t like that too much, no more concerts or too crowded usually. Still, definetely an inspirational song.
Manu Chao - Raining in Paradise - As I am looking forward to the new album to be released in September, this track makes the waiting easier. Missed them at Sziget, hope to catch them somewhere else. A great track !
Have a great summer !

Delta Music Fest

By some sort of accident - mainly the will to escape to the Danube Delta combined with not knowing too much about the type of music to be there - I somehow got to attend the Delta Music Fest. On the way there I found out it was sort of an electronic music festival, which news I embraced with some sort of moderate enthusiasm :).
But in the end, it was not so bad afterall. I thought I would only like one band - Shukar Collective - but it seemed that in the end they had a rather poor performance and I loved some other bands.
First day debuted without much interest from my side but with some nice mixes from DJ Godjira. The guy mixed some Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana and others alike on some “electronic” rhythms which did not sound that bad after all, even for a non-initiated like myself. Then followed Shukar Collective which did not seem to enjoy being there at all - therefore all the people were rather still, therefore their performance was quite poor and finally therefore a poor show afterall.
But it all ended up quite well with the Austrians from Sofa Surfers which played some great rockish music, with some electronic sounds in it.
Day two started with Bumbapa - which were absolutelly horible. Just plain bad, sorry to say that guys. Finally, the show improved somehow with The Pixels, which sounded ok and with Unkle - quite a refined sound, showing professionalism, but still quite chaotic and not finalized. Things were anyway not looking too good, so I did not stay for any Pagal or any of the kind.
Day three was probably one of the best, with Cold Cut which really great - the band I liked most out of the entire festival. Very nice mixes, very well worked out and an awsome vocalist. Too bad he spent 50% of the time off-stage :). Bango de Gaia was really not my kind and that was it in the end.
Overall, a nice impression despite a lot of people with the sole purpose to show off and some really poor shows from some of the bands. Ah, and nice organizing of the event also.
As a recap, here is what I liked:
Sofa Surfers - Good Day to Die - they played this in the concert, a little faster and with a more developed soundCold Cut - True Skool - this is the kind of plays they had in the show

Not so…chemical

google 1st page

On Saturday I managed to reach the Chemical Brothers concert in Bucharest. I arrived there at about 12 PM, the location was not very crowded - even though there were quite a lot of people, there was enough space to breath.
At about 1AM the guys started their show, which lasted for about 2 hours. As there was an album promotion concert, I wasn’t expected too many “hits” to be played. Still, I must say I was quite dissapointed with the quality of what I heard. Mostly there was instrumental music and even though there were some nice sounds, not anything that will move you from your seat.
The only highlists were the all-known hits - Hey Boy, Hey Girl, Galvanize and such.
All in all, probably a good show for the very-dedicated fans of Chemical Brothers but not so much for me.
And if you want to see how it was, here it is - video of Hey Boy, Hey Girl, from the Bucharest concert.

First Ride

After the first snow, today was the first ride - in Sinaia. The slope was quite ok, but boring as I knew it. Quite a lot of wind and fog and only 2 rides were possible as afterwards the cable broke down and you could not go up anymore. But it was really nice to go snowboarding in November….looking forward for more.
And a friendly advice to the drivers going to the slopes: get some winter tires, forget about your fancy car, it will be usless in the snow with slicks….:P. You’ll just manage to annoy everybody who will have to rescue and wait for you.
No pictures, unfortunatelly, I was there alone (sadface) and with no camera. Luckily, SHE just bought a ski suit so maybe she will join from now on :D.

Bran Van - rediscovered

google 1st page

Bran Van 3000 plays some of the best “chill-out and driving” music, according to my taste. I have loved them since the beginning and I’ve been listening to Glee, their first album, religiously.
Unfortunatelly, they did not released too much ever since so I had to stick to that one - until recently I rediscovered their 2007 album, Rose.
Quite a different sound, more profound, they dropped some of the rapping they were using on the first one and overall a more consistent music. Gets closer to Buddha Bar or Hotel Costes. Still, I prefer it to the above as it is more dynamic and has more substance.
One of the tracks I liked best out of Rose - House Lights. You can buy the album on Amazon.

Memories of an Immigrant

google 2nd page

Probably one of the most important releases of this year comes from Wyclef Jean, one of my most favourite artists of all time. 10 years after his solo debut with Carnival one, here comes the Carnival, Vol. 2: Memoirs of an Immigrant album.
The album sounds, as expected, amazingly good. On each track Wycleaf invited some friends to sing with, therefore you can also hear Shakira, Norah Jones, Mary J Blige and so on.
One of the best tracks comes from what would seem like an odd combination - Wyclef Jean feat Serj Tankian (from System of a Down) - Riot into the most rock sound of the album.
“Sweetest girl (dollar bill)” is one of the most played tracks on the radios, featuring Akon and Lil Wayne. Then there’s “Any Other Day“, with Nina Simone, featuring a more peaceful sound in order to adapt to her great voice. Paul Simon sings on “Fast Car“, reminding of Tracy Chapman’s track while Mary J Blige puts the passion she’s renowed for in “What about the Baby“.
All in all, a great album and an amazing journey through a diversity of musical genres.
And as you are used to, here is one song to download: Wyclef Jean feat Serj Tankian - Riot.

Back from Saas Fee

Saas Fee (in Switzerland) was really nice - a very pittoresque atmosphere, nice slopes and a some nice clubs and restaurants. Unfortunatelly, it was not so much snowboarding, but as it was it was really nice.
As Switzerland is very far aways, some nice tracks got me going and here comes the part to share with you - Prodigy vs Enya - Smack My Bitch Up Orrinocco Flow. One of the few remixes I like, but I like it a lot !
